A new induction resource is available to help casual employees and their employers understand paid Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) leave, ensuring every worker in Australia knows their rights to safety and support.
Developed by Transitioning Well in consultation with lived experience and small business industry experts, the resource (available at 10DaysPaidFDVLeave.com.au) provides clear, practical guidance on eligibility, confidentiality and how to access paid FDV leave. It also includes conversation simulations that demonstrate how managers and employees can talk about sensitive issues safely and respectfully.
The initiative responds to findings from the Flinders University Independent Review of the Fair Work Amendment (Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave) Act 2022, which found that while the policy has been a vital step forward, awareness and understanding, particularly among small businesses and casual workers, remains limited.
The Flinders University review recommended continued promotion and development of FDV leave resources, with a focus on small business, casual workers, and vulnerable employee groups including First Nations, CALD, LGBTQIA+, and regional communities.
“No one should have to choose between income and safety,” said Transitioning Well Co-Director Dr Sarah Cotton. “This resource helps ensure that every worker, regardless of their employment type, understands their right to take paid time off to manage the impacts of family and domestic violence. It also gives employers the tools they need to respond appropriately and with care.”
The new induction guide explains that all employees, including casuals, are entitled to 10 days of paid FDV leave each year, available from their first day of work. The leave can be taken in part or in full, and employers must keep related information private and confidential.
“This resource is a vital step in creating workplaces where casual employees impacted by family and domestic violence feel safe, valued and empowered to seek support from day one,” Cotton says.
